NIS-BMIS gives every border officer a hardened mobile workstation that reads passports, verifies the holder's face against the official photo, and surfaces the traveller's full BMIS history in seconds — online or off. Supervisors monitor every checkpoint from a web portal, draw permitted operating zones on a live map, and see movements the moment they are recorded. The whole platform runs on Nigerian infrastructure, with no third-party recognition services in the chain of custody. 4 integrated channels — mobile, portal, API, BMIS database. 512-d ArcFace descriptors, indexed and matched on Nigerian servers. 0 external recognition vendors in the verification path.
Officers were verifying travellers from paper logs and unconnected workstations, with no biometric check on the holder and no perimeter on where staff could operate. Manual MRZ entry: Passport numbers were keyed by hand, with no checksum to catch transposed digits before the wrong record was opened. No holder verification: Nothing tied the person standing at the desk to the photo on file — impostor cases relied entirely on the officer's eye. No offline operation: A dropped link at a remote post meant traveller histories could not be pulled, halting the queue. No perimeter control: Officer credentials worked anywhere — there was no enforcement that an officer was physically inside the assigned border post.
Four pillars, one workflow. 01 Document Capture: Camera-driven MRZ scan with torch, autofocus, server-side image cleanup and full check-digit validation. 02 Biometric Verification: ArcFace 512-d descriptors compare the holder against the BMIS photo and the on-chip ePassport image. 03 Geofenced Operations: Admins draw border posts on a live map; officers outside the radius are signed out automatically. 04 Unified Intelligence: Movements, watchlist hits and overstayers stream from one source of truth into a single supervisor portal.
What the officer carries. A single Expo-built workstation that handles the whole encounter from passport open to traveller cleared. 01 MRZ scan with torch, continuous autofocus and check-digit validation — never opens a record on a failed checksum. 02 NFC ePassport read with BAC, extracting the on-chip photo for a tamper-resistant comparison. 03 Verify holder by camera against the BMIS reference photo, with similarity score and review thresholds. 04 Offline cache of recent lookups and geofenced session — credentials only work inside the assigned post.
Operational at national scale. 87,957 face descriptors indexed from the live BMIS photo set. Match threshold (L2 distance) ≤ 0.6 for automatic confirmation. 5/5 MRZ check digits validated before any record is opened. 90 second cold-start ceiling for face match, with clean error surfaced after. 100% on-premise inference — no traveller image leaves Nigerian servers.
